Peacefully, on the morning of November 16, 2014 after a lengthy battle with dementia . Alan is survived by his loving wife of more than 50 years, Fleur de Mai. He will be greatly missed by his children Mara, Nina, David(Margaret), his stepson Carl ( Kathy) and by his grandchildren Leighton, Tanya, Caroline, Crystal (Shane) and Dustin and his four great grandsons, James, Cole, Austin and Cameron .He leaves behind to mourn his many nieces and nephews. Alan was predeceased by his first wife Doris, his brother Robert and his sister Lenamay (Jerre)
His editor Pierre Berton once called Alan Canada's greatest writer of non fiction. From his work at the CBC in the 50's until his retirement at the age of 92, after 30 years of writing for the founder of Four Season's Hotels , Alan will always be remembered as the consummate wordsmith. Alan served 5 years in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War escorting convoys in the North Atlantic. The last months of his life were spent at the Perley and Rideau Veterans Health Centre in Ottawa and the family would like to extend their appreciation to all the staff for their outstanding care.
