THOMPSON, Melville (Mel)
Bell Canada
Royal Lepage Team Realty

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Melville (Mel) Thompson on Monday, October 24, 2016 in his 79th year. Beloved and cherished husband for over 56 years of Marie (Connolly). Much loved father of Maureen Wainwright, Melville (Cathy), Michael, Marc (Meg). Devoted Grandpa to Sam and Natalie Wainwright, Madeline and Will Thompson. Predeceased by his parents, Melville Thompson, and Irene Champline. Will be fondly remembered by his brother, Gerald (Vivian), many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mel's love and devotion to his family was beyond measure and he instilled in them a concern for others and a love of nature. Times spent delivering food baskets, attending charity fundraisers, camping trips, canoe trips, fishing, horseback riding, ski holidays and family times at the cottage will always be treasured. Over the years Mel showed concern for the less fortunate in his work with the St. Vincent De Paul Society, Waupoos Foundation and raising money for local charities. This work and the awareness he created in his workplace of the needs of the poor led to him receiving an Outstanding Service to the Community Award from his employer Bell Canada. His interest in his church and community inspired him to serve on parish councils, as a Catholic School Board Trustee, to participate in community associations and coach basketball.

Words are inadequate to express our appreciation of the many dear friends and family members who supported our family in our journey of the last few years. May you be forever blessed and rewarded. Our thanks also goes to the In-patient and Outreach Geriatric Psychiatry staff of the Royal Ottawa Hospital for your tireless efforts to give Mel the best possible quality of life, to the staff of Granite Ridge Care Community, Harbour House for your compassionate care and to Fitzi Grant who cared for Mel as she would a dear family member.
